FAQ

Can I use worm castings or compost in place of soil? + -

These products work best as an additive to soil, rather than a replacement. We've had best results using compost in the range of 30% - 40% of the total soil volume.

If you want to create your own soil mix, a popular mix is 1/3 peat moss, 1/3 horticultural grade vermiculite (coarse), and 1/3 "compost".

Peat moss is usually pretty easy to find at your local garden or home improvement store, but vermiculite can sometimes be difficult to find locally. Perlite will also work in place of the vermiculite, and is easier to find, but vermiculite will do a better job of aerating the soil & retaining moisture and is worth the extra effort to find it.

The "compost" portion should include as many sources of organic compost as possible. What you're looking for is a vast array of different foods for the plant so it can take what it needs to thrive. Blue Ribbon Compost plus Wiggle Worm castings is an excellent combination. We use it in our own gardens with great success.

How is this different than using traditional fertilizer? + -

We like to use the comparison of having an energy drink to having a health meal.

From a distance, it would look like they both do the same thing. The person consuming the item would have more energy and work faster than someone who had consumed nothing, but over time differences would start to show. The person surviving on energy drinks will eventually "crash" and if there is no other source of nutrition they may show other signs of stress or illness. On the other hand, the person who has been eating healthy meals will have better strength & stamina and better immunity from illness & disease.

In the case of plants, you will see growth with either type of product, but the compost will give you stronger plants that produce more fruit, have better resistance to bugs and disease, and are less likely to suffer damage from winds and other environmental stressors.
