Preventing Algae
Decaying leaves and lawn clippings can also feed a pond with excess nutrients. If there are deciduous trees within a short distance of the lake or pond, then special care needs to be taken in fall. Leaves should be raked regularly and removed from the water as much as possible. Mowing around a lake or pond will introduce grass clippings and will allow more soil to enter the lake in run off. It is best, therefore, to allow grasses to grow in the area around the water. Do take care, however, as long grass and water may attract some potentially undesirable reptile life. It may be necessary to keep a section clear to allow easy access to the water.

Limiting the amount of phosphorous that enters the water body might delay the periods between algal blooms but it will not prevent them.
