Water line build-up is a sign of dirty water in swimming pools and spas. It is a visible indication on the side of your pool or spa that the water contains body oils and other organic contaminants or at least has in the past. It is unsightly but what can be done about it? Sure, there are plenty of products that you can use to clean it up but remember that water line build-up is a symptom not the main problem.
Besides being unsightly, the "scum line" can also pose health risks. The greases and oils that create the scum line can effectively create a "shield" behind which bacteria, dirt, and other contaminants can avoid contact with the pool sanitizer.
The oils and other contaminants responsible for water line build-up in swimming pools and spas come primarily from bathers. Aside from natural body oils, other oils can enter the water including oils from lotions, cosmetics and of course, sunscreen. As there is virtually no way to prevent these contaminants from entering a pool or spa, it is best to look at methods to remove it from a pool or spa and to prevent it from occurring again.

Enzymes are chemical in nature but they are quite unlike traditional pool chemicals which one must handle with extreme care. Enzymes are proteins, chains of amino acids, which accelerate specific reactions. Traditional Water Line Solutions
The traditional solutions to water line build-up called for harsh cleansers to be used on the side of the pool or spa.
