Appetite in lower animals, as in people, is a function of well-being. Fish and shrimp when healthy and not stressed will exhibit good appetite when fed with standard quality feed.
When animals refuse to eat, or lose appetite, its causes go beyond the feed itself. Loss of appetite could be a symptom of a larger problem such as a deterioration of pond parameters, pollution, toxicity reaching critical levels, or the onset of disease.
Good management practices require that farmers observe a stringent regimen of checking pond parameters on schedule and to check the environs of the farm for potential problems. It is good practice to always check the feed and feeding trays to see if there are potential problems like dead or moribund animals.
The July-August, 2002, issue of Aquaculture Magazine featured an excellent article titled Disease Management in Shrimp Culture Ponds by Henry Clifford and Harry Cook. This article outlines an outstanding procedure that any farmer can easily follow.
