Solutions for Phosphate Removal

Phosphates are an underlying source of many water quality problems in swimming pools including algae growth and chlorine demand.

Swimming pools are shocked with chlorine in order to sanitize the water. However, when algae are present, most of the chlorine will be unable to perform this task. The chlorine will instead be used to burn-off the algae and the pool water may not be properly sanitized unless enormous amounts of chlorine are used.

Of the three chemicals that are required for algae growth; Nitrogen (N), Phosphorous (P), and Potassium (K), phosphorous most easily finds its way into swimming pools from many sources including make-up water, fertilizers, detergents and even other swimming pool cleaning chemicals. 

While there are several algaecides available to pool owners, these products treat only the symptom of the problem. Treating the source of the problem by removing phosphates and keeping them at very low levels is the best way to prevent algae from growing in the first place.
