The concept of enzyme supplementation to achieve better feed conversion efficiency is not a novel approach to animal feeding and nutrition. Many scientists in the past have dabbled on this concept, but with mixed success.
What is new about ez Aquaculture enzymes as a feed additive is that the supplementation is now targeted to the total nutritional profile of the feed, rather than on its individual components. Currently and in the past, enzyme supplementation means adding a protease here, or a cellulase there, to increase the absorption of specific ingredients in the feed. This is because few manufacturers are able to produce multi-enzymes or broad-based enzyme formulations that can address all of the different ingredients in the feed. For those manufacturers who could produce multi-enzyme formulas, the cost of using them was prohibitive to feed millers.
Why supplement feed with digestive enzymes?
The short answer is this: Meat-producing animals including fish and shrimp, when cultured or farmed, are fed using ingredients that are strange to their natural digestive make-up or normal food in the wild. Ingredients in milled feed such as soy proteins, corn, wheat, and animal crude fat are often too complex for farmed animals to digest.
Hence, the addition of broad-based enzymes to the feed is seen as supplementing the animal’s internal production of enzymes. Complex feed ingredients could mean the inability of the animal to simplify these ingredients into molecules that can be easily absorbed as nutrition to fuel energy generation, reproduction, growth and disease prevention processes. Adding broad-based enzymes that address each and every component in the feed gives the farmed animal the added ability to process feed with less energy expended and at a far higher efficiency in breaking down complex material into fully absorbable nutrients.
Substitution of feed ingredients by millers as a means of cutting costs can also mean that feed become less digestible, resulting in lower nutritional uptake, and hence lower meat production. Too complex a feed could simply mean that the farmed animal does not posses the correct enzyme, nor the correct blend of enzymes, to break down specific feed ingredients or that the animal itself is overwhelmed by the amount of energy required to break down certain feed elements.
Adding enzymes in feed increases nutritive value to substituted ingredients and even of poor diets.
In addition, timed and volumetric regular feedings, a procedure followed in farm environments may actually overwhelm an animal’s ability to produce the correct and sufficient enzymes through its own biological processes or from inherent bacteria populations in the digestive tract.
Enzyme supplementation to animal feed has been proven to improve the digestion efficiency in animals, increase bioavailability of ingredients in the feed, optimize nutritional uptake, resulting in lower feed costs by increasing feed conversion efficiency.
Another benefit to enzyme supplementation includes the ability of enzymes to detoxify ingredients in the feed caused by rancidity, exposure to extremes of temperature, or poor processing. Toxins in feed will lower survival rates, slow down growth and adversely affect the ability to fend off disease. Feed ingredients especially cereals and legumes have allergenic components and anti-nutritional factors that prevent their own uptake as well as that of other ingredients in the feed, causing animals to die, become moribund, or simply stop growing.
Finally, as the ultimate benefit of enzyme supplementation and the resulting optimized nutritional uptake, animals supplemented with a broad-based digestive enzyme, generate lower wastes and decreased manure odors. Current DE (Digestive Enzyme) formulations include top-dress enzymes for applications in poultry production as well as in fish and shrimp culture.
A most welcome recent breakthrough is the introduction of Miller Formulations. These products allow for the inclusion of enzymes during the mixing stage of milling, prior to pelleting. This development allows feed mills to save on labor and extra equipment associated with topdressing the finished feed with enzymes at the post-pelleting stage.
