Water quality problems typically become established over the long winter season when most people do not use or treat their swimming pools.

Algae

Nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus must all be present in order for algae to grow. Phosphorus is perhaps the most important nutrient for algae and a common contaminant of swimming pools that originates from a variety of sources including common garden fertilizers, soil, urine, tap water and, in some locations, acid rain.
